Justice of Peace for Victoria

A justice of the peace in Australia is typically someone of good stature in the community who is authorised to witness and sign statutory declarations and affidavits and to certify copies of original documents.

Justices of the Peace (JPs) are volunteers appointed by the Governor of Victoria. The primary role of a JP is to witness a person making a statutory declaration or affidavit, and to certify copies of original documents. JPs come from all sections of the community and are available across VIC.

The role of the Justice of the Peace (JP) is to act as an independent and objective witness to documents people use for official or legal purposes. JPs can serve different roles in different jurisdictions.
